기관지 천식 (bronchial asthma)은 기관지의 발작성 수축을 일으킬 수 있는 여러가지 자극에 대해서 기관과 기관지의 민감한 반응을 특징으로 하는 질환이다. 환자들은 발작적으로 심한 호흡곤란과 천명이 나타나며, 드물게 지속성 천식상태 (status asthmaticus)가 나타날 경우 치명적이다. 종류로는 아토피성 또는 알레르기성 천식, 비아토피성 천식, 약물 원인성 천식, 직업성 천식, 알레르기성 기관지폐성, 아스페루길루스 병 등이 있다. <그림설명> This cast of the bronchial tree is formed of inspissated mucus and was coughed up by a patient during an asthmatic attack.
